Product information "Vermiculite
(Expanded mica)"Vermiculite was discovered near Millbury in Worcester County, Massachusetts, and described in 1824 by Thomas H. Webb. Due to the mineral's ability to expand into worm-shaped structures when heated to 200 to 300 °C in the direction of the crystallographic c-axis, Webb named it after the Latin word vermiculor for "worm breeder".In horticulture, it is used for: growing soil, improving soil structure, heat balance and improving nutrient supply. It is structurally stable, heat-insulating, elastic, germ-free and has a high absorption capacity. The pH value: is neutral.Due to its valuable properties, vermiculite is increasingly used both in professional horticulture and by hobby gardeners. As a clay mineral, it can absorb and release cations and thus plays a major role in nutrient supply. The availability of ammonium (nitrogen), potassium, calcium, magnesium and iron is for the plant.Vermiculite is often used as a growing substrate. It develops its heat-insulating properties especially during germination and is therefore a fantastic covering medium. When used with perlite, it ensures the absorption of excess water and optimizes ventilation. Gardeners who have clayey soils with frequent waterlogging can use vermiculite to loosen the soil and at the same time regulate the water balance. Vermiculite is ideal in combination with our Eifel pumice.
