etymology: esmeraldense = Esmeraldas, province in the north of Ecuador on the Colombian border, where the plant was first found.

Location:
epiphytic or terrestrial in the warm, humid tropical rainforest, in dark forests along the Pacific Andes in shady places at altitudes of 100-1100m.
Remarks: If Philodendron esmeraldense grows in brighter areas, the leaves can turn reddish. The species has very long stems, so the leaves hang down vertically, protecting it from high light intensity in the bright midday hours and allowing optimal light output at dusk.
The leaves of this cultivar are narrower and shorter than those of the nominal form.
