Description

Philodendron erubescens 'White Princess' (5,5cm Topf)

Philodendron erubescens 'White Princess' (5,5cm Topf)

Surname: Philodendron erubescens 'White Princess', K. Koch & Augustin 1854/55
Synonyms: not known
etymology: erubenscens = blushing, reddish
Reproduction: Meristem
Origin: Middle and South America
Location:
hemiepiphytic, climbing in dense forests in the tropical humid rainforest on both sides of the Andes and in the Amazon basin in semi-shaded places
Remarks:
Philodendron erubescens is one of the most popular Philodendrons today. The description is based on a cultivated plant that was probably originally found in Colombia. This species is very variable, so there are numerous cultivars on the market today. The red-leafed varieties are particularly popular, the best known of which is probably Philodendron erubescens 'Red Emerald'.
Koch's co-author may have been Friedrich Ludwig Augustin, a Potsdam doctor with an extensive herbarium and a large collection of tropical plants, who exchanged plants with the Botanical Garden.
