Remarks:
The original description of Philodendron bipinnatifidum comes from Schott from a collection that he brought to Vienna from Brazil and which probably came from near Rio de Janeiro; no specimens have survived.
Philodendron selloum was described by C. Koch from material cultivated in the Berlin Botanical Garden and sent by H. Sello, the head gardener of Sans Souci, the Imperial Prussian estate in Potsdam, and a colleague and correspondent of Koch. In an article in the Botanische Zeitung, which appeared before the first valid description, Koch (1852) stated that his Philodendron selloum was identical with Vellozo's "Arum pinnatifidum". Koch considered Schott's Philodendron bipinnatifidum to be a different species.
