etymology: rugapetiolatum: ruga = fold; petiolus = petiole, refers to the tightly and deeply folded epidermis of the petioles.

Terrestrial or hemiepiphytic, on the Pacific slopes of Ecuador and Colombia, in humid forests at altitudes of 800-1300m
Remarks:
Philodendron rugapetiolatum was first collected by Édouard François André (1840-1911), a French landscape architect and gardener of the late 19th century who collected in the northern Andes. He named his collection of this species Philodendron altaquerese, most likely after the town of Altaquer in Colombia where he first found the plant. In 2016, Tom Croat and MMMora. In: Aroideana 39: 210 validly described the species as Philodendron rugapetiolatum.
