etymology:
lueddemanniana = Lueddemann (Alsace), head gardener at PESCATORE in Paris
Trade name: Cattleya
Reproduction: Seeds
Origin: Venezuela
Location:
Epiphyte found on the northern coastal range in fairly low, bushy hills at altitudes of 0 to 500 meters
Remarks:
This plant was sent under the name Cattleya maxima to the well-known collection of Mr. Pescatore at St. Cloud, near Paris, France. HG Reichenbach mentioned in his description that the dry flower had a natural spread of 26 cm.
About 10 years later, after Cattleya lueddemanniana had been described in France by HG Reichenbach, without any taxonomic description, the same species was named Cattleya speciosissima Hort in England. This is one of the reasons why this species is still called Cattleya speciosissima in England and especially in Venezuela.
