Description

Anthurium oxycarpum

Anthurium oxycarpum

Surname: Anthurium oxycarpum, EFPoeppig & SLEndlicher.1845
Synonyms: Anthurium strictum, NEBr. ex English 1879
etymology: oxy = pointed
carpum = fruit
Reproduction: Division
Origin: Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru
Location: epi- and lithophytic on the eastern side of the Andes, in moist and wet tropical forests at altitudes of 100-300m.
Remarks: According to the original description, this species smells of vanilla during flowering to attract the right pollinator.
The specimen designated as the type specimen by Poeppig was collected in Brazil near Ega (now Tefe), which lies on the Río Solimoes at the mouth of the Río Japura. This herbarium is now lost and despite a thorough search no duplicates could be found. Therefore, a second Poeppig collection from Yurimaguas in Peru, which is cited by Engler in his 1905 revision, is referred to here as the lectotype. It is important to note the enormous geographical distance.
