Description

Anthurium magnificum

Anthurium magnificum

Surname: Anthurium sylvestris, Linden 1865
Synonyms: Anthurium sylvatica, Sander 1908
non Anthurium magnificum, Bull 1865 = Anthurium grande, Bull 1865
etymology: magnificum = great, excellent
Reproduction: Division
Origin: Colombia
Location: The species is considered endemic at altitudes of 800 - 2125 in the Colombian Cordillera, where it grows primarily epiphytically in a warm, humid climate. However, it has also been found in Panama, and there are reports that Anthurium magnificum is spreading as an invasive species in southern China.
Remarks: Anthurium magnificum LINDEN was found by Braam, a collector of linden trees, in the Eastern Cordilleras. Linden showed the foliage plant at the exhibition in Amsterdam in 1865, where it attracted great attention:
Our accompanying plate cannot convey the beauty of these excellent plants, for the leaves reach a diameter of 1.5 - 2 feet and the olive-green surface with white markings along the veins has that peculiar, beautiful metallic sheen that no brush can reproduce. (Garden Flora Vol. 15)
